Stone Walls
The one thing you notice while driving around central suburbian Auckland is the proliforation of stone walls. Of course there is a good reason for this as Auckland is dotted with volcanos the latest of which stands in the middle of the harbour, Rangitoto. This means a good supply of rock and as it is quite close to the surface, at times you can’t build unless it comes out.
These are the facts but the reason I’ve started this photo blog is that I’ve always been fascinated by the variation. Different builders, different times and, of course, different budgets have gone into the construction of the walls around auckland central. I love textural photography and thought that I should start putting some of the photos I have taken of these walls somewhere where people could see them and potentially add to them.
I’m also a civil engineer so appreciate fully the time and effort that has gone into some of these walls. Let’s hope they are still there 100 years from now.
